自然と匠の調和が生み出す究極の美

For centuries, the craft of moulded gourd-ware has been a form of gourd art unique to northern China, where artisans shape hard-shell gourds (Lagenaria siceraria) using various techniques/materials. Although they may be designed for many purposes, these moulded gourds – plain or decorated – have traditionally been used as containers for pet insects such as crickets and katydids during winter.

何世紀にもわたって、型取り瓢箪は中国北部に特有の芸術のひとつです。職人は硬い外皮を持つ瓢箪を、さまざまな技法・素材を用いて特定の形に成形します。飾りがあるものもないものもありますが、これらの瓢箪は主に冬にコオロギやキリギリスなどの鳴く虫を入れ、暖を取るとともにその鳴き声を鑑賞するための容器として用いられてきました。

These singing insect companions are believed to bring cheer and a feeling of prosperity into the home, brightening winters in times when there was little entertainment. The gourd both shelters and warms the insects, and plays a vital role in amplifying and harmonizing their song, making it truly music to the keeper’s ears.

鳴く虫は、家庭に明るさと活気をもたらす存在とされ、娯楽が少なかった昔の冬には、まるで夏の賑わいを思い起こさせました。瓢箪は虫の住処であり暖を提供し、その鳴き声を増幅し調和させる重要な役割を果たします。そのため、飼い主にとってそれはまさに耳に心地よい音楽となるのです。

ローレリーフ型取り瓢箪

As a pinnacle of gourd moulding, low-relief moulded gourd ware is highly decorative, featuring motifs of deep cultural significance. These designs are thoughtfully conceived, impressed upon the surface, and arranged to express the artist’s aesthetic vision. This art form represents an exquisite fusion of human creativity and nature.

型取り瓢箪の一ジャンルとして、ローレリーフ（浅浮き彫り）の型取り瓢箪は、その装飾性の極みに達しており、文化的意義を持つ多様なモチーフで高度に飾られています。これらのモチーフは綿密に設計され、表面に刻印され、それぞれが職人の美的意図を最もよく伝えるように配置されています。この芸術形式は、人間の創意性を自然の作品と見事に調和させています。

In essence, the fruit grows and gradually conforms to the shape of its mould, capturing every detail of the design. The patterns are transferred from the inside of the mould onto the gourd shell, and over time, the delicate surface reliefs become more pronounced.

要するに、植物の果実は成長するにつれてゆっくりと型の形を取り込み、型の内部にある詳細なデザインが果実に移されます。模様は型の内側から瓢箪の殻に転写され、そして表面の細やかな隆起が徐々に鮮明になります。

Because these patterns emerge naturally during the plant’s life cycle, a mature gourd grown inside a mould tends to retain shell integrity and bear clear, durable relief motifs. This allows the gourd not only to endure handling but also to develop a beautiful patina as it ages.

これらの模様は植物のライフサイクル中に自然に現れるもので、成熟した果実が型の内で殻の一体性を保ち、明瞭で長持ちする隆起モチーフが刻まれることを可能にします。その結果、瓢箪は扱いに耐えるだけでなく、年月を経て美しいパティーナが現れます。

A fine low-relief moulded gourd is extremely rare. Even the best craftsmanship cannot guarantee success once nature assumes control after the mould is in place. For much of the year, the process is dependent on weather. In earlier times, it took a team of people with diverse skills and knowledge to collaborate and maintain quality at every stage.

良質なローレリーフ型取り瓢箪は非常に稀少です。最上の職人技でも、型が設置された後は自然の影響を完全には制御できません。年間を通じて天候に左右されることが多く、昔は異なる専門性を持つ人々が協力し、工程のひとつひとつで品質管理を徹底していました。装飾的なローレリーフ型取り瓢箪を作るには、美術と園芸双方の深い知識と経験が求められます。

…A Touch of History

‘[The ornamentally moulded gourd wares] first appeared during the K’ang-hsi reign. They come in shapes of virtually every kind of utensil, such as vases, dishes, cups, and bowls. There are relief renderings of flowers, birds, landscapes, and inscriptions, all marvellously clear and distinct, executed by nature. They are created by encasing a newly sprung gourd with a mould, and as the gourd grows, it slowly fills the mould conforming to its shape (——Chu Shen)’.

花範葫蘆器，清人沈初有云：“康熙間始為之，瓶、盤、杯、碗之屬，無所不有。陽文花鳥、山水、題字，俱極晴朗，不假人力。其法於葫生後，造器模包其外，漸長漸滿，遂成器型。然數千百中僅成一二，完好者最難得”。
